The rule of thirds in dream chasing | # 28
Newsletter No. 28. 5 things worth sharing this week.
Hello~~ 👋
First of all, apologies for the late newsletter this week as I had trouble coming up with a feature image I was happy with. Thank you for waiting!
Second, I realise that this newsletter is slowly turning into an ice skating focused one but I can't help it! I've just been consuming a lot of ice skating content so that's what I have to share. I think it's awesome that I have this platform to document my skating journey. Hopefully I'll learn more about skating, engage more with Singapore's ice skating community, and contribute what I can.
5 things worth sharing this week
1. After a so-so practice session at the ice rink, I remembered a nugget of wisdom from a former Olympian. When engaging in anything hard or chasing a dream, remember the rule of thirds. You should feel good a third of the time, okay a third of the time, and crappy a third of the time. Anything too far off from that and you're either pushing too hard or not enough. It's advice that not only applies to athletes but also to anyone just dealing with life. Watch the original clip here.
2. This week marked the start of the Junior Grand Prix in Courchevel, France. The competition was broadcast live on the ISU Junior Grand Prix YouTube channel and brings together some of the world’s most promising young figure skaters (13 - 19 years old). Singapore had one skater at the event, McKayla Ong, who competed in the short and long program. Another inspiring performance was Ireland's sibling ice dance team who performed despite a lack of practice. Lastly, the team that absolutely blew me away was Lim/Quan, the champion ice dance team from Korea. There was just something so captivating about their performance. There was no question that the power and speed in their skating was at another level.
3. Carrying on with the figure skating theme, I watched a few videos this week by YouTuber Michelle Khare. She's known for trying out different and often physically demanding roles. In this video, she trained on the ice for 2 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 8 weeks. She also did an hour of off-ice training twice a week and an hour of physical training at the gym twice a week. At the end, she put together a performance which included a flip jump! Her improvement was astounding and I aspire to have that type of confidence when facing tough challenges in life.
4. I've shared a few songs from Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series in newsletters number 24 and 26. The latest episode which came out this week featured a cover of the duet What Do You Know About Love. I'd not heard this song before but it's taken from the Broadway production of Frozen. It's a lovely duet and how they chose to showcase it was really entertaining as well.
5. The act of Quiet Quitting in the West has been making its rounds in the media recently. ChannelNewsAsia also released a video feature about a similar phenomenon in China known as Bai Lan (Let it rot). While the video examined Bai Lan culture in the context of China's development, the fact that the west is also experiencing a similar trend seems to suggest that there is a common cause that transcends borders. 🤔
Thanks for reading and I hope you found something unexpected. ✨
